Biographical Information
Fort Worth artist, Susie Kathrine Harrison (1953 - ) has had a lifelong affinity for making art. Her skill was recognized early and encouraged by family and educational programs. She studied commercial art at the University of North Texas and chose to focus on drawing and painting. In 1976 she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Harrison worked as a professional graphic artist for several local companies, however, the commercial art business prompted a new career turn. Merging an interest of teaching and training others, she was committed to further education and obtained a teaching certificate. This opened opportunities for her to blend art and teaching skills. After earning certification from Texas Wesleyan University in 1981 Harrison's educational career began in earnest and she taught high school art for twenty five years. Instructing students to explore and enjoy visual skills was fulfilling but creating art was her passion.
A significant internal shift occurred in 1991 when Harrison attended Texas Tech University's extension campus for a graduate level art class. Uninterrupted studio time and the beautiful nature setting restored her desire to seriously cultivate personal art making. She retired from public education in 2006 to concentrate more time in her studio. Harrison has competed nationally, shown her work locally, state wide and has been awarded multiple solo shows.
Throughout her artistic career, Susie Harrison has remained captivated with the human figure and images of the natural world. Powerful charcoal drawings investigated women's physical, emotional and psychological aspects when facing change and transformation. Recent works are exploring the connection between the natural world and this transformational state.
